Snowboard Spring Break – the annual product test, snowboard get-together, party week and celebration of snowboarding – went down last week in Kaunertal, Austria and attendees were treated to sunny days, sidehits a-plenty and the best spring park in the Alps. The 2018 edition of Snowboard Spring Break was a four-day affair which enjoyed mostly fantastic weather. In addition to the product testing and slushy spring vibes, there was a full program of on and off hill events to enjoy over the four day main test, with event support provided by Monster Energy, who brought their Paris-Dakar truck to the event as the base for entertainments. Here’s a round up of the main talking points for the week…
Snowboard Spring Break Product Test
One of the key aspects of Snowboard Spring Break is the Product Test – snowboards, boots, bindings, googles and clothing were on hand for attendees to demo, for free, months before they’re available in the shops. 17 of snowboarding’s best brands made the trip and with over 200 testers and 9 UK based shops in attendance, more than 400 tests were written up from the public, media and shop retail staff alike.
Monster Energy were on hand for the first three afternoons with a fully featured chill area, a DJ spinning mellow tunes and drinks so that Snowboard Spring Break attendees could wind down the day in the right way.
Lib Tech Lanes of Glory bowling
Eight teams, €5 entry per person and winner takes all – plus with on the spot prizes from Lib Tech, including one lucky winner of a brand new Lib Tech Skate Banana, this was a super fun – and closely fought – night.
Dragon Methodical Madness 5
Dragon put on the fifth edition of their Methodical Madness competition, which was hosted by Dragon team rider Will Smith to celebrate his tenth year with the brand, featuring a custom-shaped hip that offered both regular and goofy riders a perfect trajectory and maximum air time. With the sun blazing, the riders threw down hard in the qualifiers while Monster Energy provided the DJ and MC Paul Vines amped the crowd up. Once the finalists were chosen, Will put on a high ollie comp, which saw the entrants ollieing off the flat and over a duct tape and beer can highbar. Angus Leith took the win and the prize money, before things got serious for the Dragon Methodical Madness 5 final, with Lewis Sonvico eventually taking the win. The full event report and edit is coming soon, so watch out for that!
Event partner Monster Energy are well known for putting on a show, and the main party of the week – Monster Rocks – was on Tuesday night at Zappa Dello on the edge of town. Monster Rocks was all time, featuring live music from Mondowave and The DeRossi ‘Incident’? An epic way to finish the week!
Kaunertal, Austria has been the home for Snowboard Spring Break for the last 12 years. The base station for the ski area and the Snowboard Spring Break Test Village – with it’s 100 sq m of inside demo and storage space – is at 2700m, ensuring that snow conditions are always on point. What’s more, attendees can drive all the way from their accommodation to the Test Village in just 35 minutes. Riders then choose whether to drop in from the Test Village and get riding right away with a 500m vertical drop to the lower sections of the mountain or take one of the four further lifts that open up the freeride and park terrain of the upper mountain. With Snowboard Spring Break packages starting at just €175 for three days and three nights, Kaunertal is a fantastic venue for end of season shredding!
